Rangshala

Presented by Teesri Duniya & Festival Accès Asie

In collaboration with Festival Accès Asie— a non-profit organization and an artistic, interdisciplinary, intercultural, and intergenerational festival based in Tiohtiá:ke-Mooniyang-Montreal— 𝗧𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗿𝗶 𝗗𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘆𝗮 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲 presents a comedic reading of 𝐃𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚❜𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞, performed by eight actors.

With help from Panna, an Indian online marriage broker, family matriarch Dhara plans an arranged marriage for her divorced son, Vipul. The potential bride, Urmila, is a filmmaker who, at 37, is considered to be past the typical marriageable age. Urmila’s film career has stalled in Canada, and she faces family secrets, scandals, and insecurities—particularly regarding Vipul’s relationship with his ex-wife, Sophie, who is the mother of their adult son, Neel. Neel has a Caucasian appearance.

Vipul convinces Urmila to put her career ambitions on hold to support Neel, who ultimately ends up plagiarizing Urmila’s work. Dhara worries about a potentially inappropriate relationship between Neel and Urmila, leading to a rift within the family. In a climactic confrontation, Dhara locks herself in her room and accuses Urmila of causing her harm. Now, she seeks Revenge for her suffering.

Dhara’s Revenge is a joyful examination of cultural norms, racism, patriarchy, sexual politics, and family scandals that restrict a career woman as well as an older widow.
