Behind the Moon – Language and Memory Talkback April 9, 2026 to April 9, 2026 Teesri’s Rangshala Studio Synopsis In a Mughlai restaurant in Toronto, a late-night visit from mysterious stranger, Jalal, rattles the cage and shatters the peace. Ayub, the restaurant’s employee, must now face the decisions he’s made and the family he’s left behind – all while keeping the restaurant shiningly clean for Qadir Bhai, the proud restaurant owner. From the award-winning playwright and novelist Anosh Irani, Behind the Moon is a story of love and loss, freedom and faith, the meaning of brotherhood, and what it means to search for a better life. Directed by Chelsea Dab Hilke, who previously directed Keffiyeh/Made in China at Teesri in April 2025. Talkback This panel aims to facilitate a conversation around the migrant experience, the rising wave of xenophobic rhetoric and policies in Canada, and the creative ways migrants find to express solidarity and resist fascist forces, it is composed of Mostafa Henaway, Varda Nisar & Nildeep Paul. Bios Mostafa Henaway, a Canadian-born Egyptian, is a long-time community organizer at the Immigrant Workers Centre in Montreal, where he has been organizing for justice for immigrant/migrant workers for over two decades. He is also a researcher and PhD candidate in geography at Concordia University. Varda Nisar (she/her) is a curator, educator, and holds a doctorate in Art History from Concordia University. Her research examines the nexus of visual production and military regimes in Pakistan, critically analyzing how museums shape national identity and civic discourse. This scholarly work is complemented by over a decade of on-the-ground curatorial and public programming experience. She curated the Oxford University Press Museum Pakistan and served as Head of Educational Programming for the Karachi Biennale, where she developed its first city-wide art outreach program. She was the Concordia Public Scholar in 2022 and was awarded the Social Justice Graduate Fellowship in 2024. Nildeep Paul is a grad student at the Department of Film and Moving Images. His research work takes place at the confluence of border studies, migration studies, and media infrastructure.
